In recent years there has been a growing movement toward living a healthier lifestyle. This is partly due to an increase in body consciousness, but it is also due to the emerging consensus that eating a healthier diet can act as a preventative measure toward stopping the onset and spread of cancer and other diseases.

A healthy diet aids in a healthy immune system. The American Cancer Society reports that if Americans changed their diets to include healthier choices, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths in the United States could be prevented. However, the belief that a healthier diet can prevent cancer, as well as deter tumor growth, does not only apply to Americans. Numerous scientists and organizations around the globe share this view. So, what foods actually stop tumor growth and aid in the prevention of cancer? The answer is very simple, and might be surprising.

Fruits

Figs: have been shown to contain a derivative of benzaldehyde, which some studies have shown to be effective toward fighting tumor growth. They also contain numerous vitamins and nutrients that can aid in weight-loss and fight bacteria.

Citrus fruits: like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits contain agents called monoterpenes that can help sweep carcinogens out of the body. In addition, oranges and lemons contain limonene which can stimulate cancer-killing cells.

Raspberries : have been shown in research studies to decrease tumor production and growth, as well as fight against colon cancer.

Tomatoes: contain lycopene which attacks free radicals that have been known to trigger cancer. Tomatoes also contain Vitamin C, which aids in the creation of a healthy immune system. Diets with an increased amount of lycopene have been shown to assist in fighting breast, prostate, pancreatic, and other cancers.

Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables: which include foods like broccoli, cauliflower, greens,There is also the Toronto Zoo which is located in Ontario, sprouts, cabbage, etc. contain indole-3-carbinol which can fight against breast cancer. Also, broccoli and sprouts contain other components that fight against free radicals and carcinogens. This can decrease the likelihood of cancerous tumors.

Carrots: contain beta carotene which can ward off many types of cancer, including but not limited to stomach, mouth, lung, throat, and breast cancers. Carrots also build up natural cancer killing cells in the blood stream. Beta carotene can also be found in other fruits and vegetables including avocados and sweet potatoes.

Mushrooms: in numerous varieties contain compounds that build the immune system. In addition, mushrooms contain lectin, a protein, that attacks cancer cells and prevents them from spreading. This may decrease the likelihood of the growth of tumors.

When parents tell children to eat their fruits and vegetables because they are good for them, they are not kidding. Research continues to show that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grains, and other healthy choices can be a preventative measure toward the decreased likelihood of developing of cancer. In addition, eating more fiber, lowering fat intake, and decreasing alcohol consumption can also lessen the likelihood of tumor growth, or lessen the likelihood of even developing cancer at all. Incorporating these foods into your diet is an inexpensive, healthy way to better yourself and the life of your family.
