Waverly Hills Sanatorium – Louisville, KY
Many would say that this spot is the most haunted place in the Bluegrass State, if not one of the most haunted places in the United states. The sanatorium opened in 1910 as a treatment facility for tuberculosis patients. It became overrun with patients as TB reached pandemic proportions in Kentucky, real cosmetics are as inappropriate as dolls. Enjoying the here-and-now is a better goal., so a larger facility was built to house at least 400 patients. This facility, which opened in 1926 is the Waverly Hills that stands today.
During its years of operation, the sanatorium was home to thousands of TB patents, most of whom did not survive. One of the most talked about locations on the property is the “Body Chute,” which was an isolated tunnel used to transport the bodies of the dead from the top to the bottom of the hill, to be taken away for burial. Reports of full body apparitions, shadow people, mists, and transparent figures have been widely documented.
Waverly Hills Sanatorium is now owned by Charlie and Tina Mattingly, and has been investigated on numerous paranormal television shows including, Ghost Hunters, and The Scariest Places on Earth. If you are interested in exploring the site, tours can be scheduled throughout the year via the Waverly Hills Sanatorium website. The website also features links to historical and paranormal photos taken at Waverly Hills.
Bobby Mackey’s Music World – Wilder, KY
If you are in the mood for a night of country music, line dancing, and ghost hunting, then visit the self-proclaimed “Most Haunted Nightclub in the U.S.” in Wilder, KY. Bobby Mackey’s Music World – located just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati – was opened by Mr. Mackey in 1978 as a country music nightclub. Today, it stands as the longest running country music nightclub in the greater Cincinnati area.
This infamous haunt has a long history stained with blood. The building where the nightclub stands now, used to be home to a slaughterhouse. Following it’s closing, the site was alleged to be home to Satanists performing occultist rituals, including the murder of animals. It was also the location of the murder of a young, pregnant woman named Pearl Bryan from Greencastle, Indiana.
Pearl Bryan was murdered in 1896 by her boyfriend, and an accomplice. The two men were occult members who tried to perform an abortion on Ms. Bryan, but then decided to decapitate her after the procedure went array. The men were executed in the last public hanging performed in Campbell County, with one of the murderers vowing to haunt the town after his death. Pearl’s body was discovered, but her head was never found. It was rumored to have been used in a Satanic ceremony, and dumped in a blood well used by the old slaughterhouse, on the location where Bobby Mackey’s Music World stands today.
Bobby Mackey’s Music World’s paranormal activities have been featured in numerous television and radio programs. It is also the subject of a book by Douglas Hensley entitled, Hell’s Gate: Terror at Bobby Mackey’s Music World.
The Waverly Hills Sanatorium, and Bobby Mackey’s Music World are two of the most haunted spots in Kentucky. For lists of more haunted places in Kentucky checkout Shadowlands Haunted Places Index and Ghosts of the Prairie: Haunted Kentucky.
